Queen Street Upgrade
Auckland’s Queen Street, one of the busiest central city thoroughfares in New Zealand is undergoing its biggest makeover in 150 years to improve the functionality and appearance of the street.
The project started early 2006 will finish mid-2008 at a cost of $43 million. The project has been entered into the 2008 NZ Institute of Landscape Architecture Landscape Awards (NZILA).
As part of this Auckland City Council initiative, Asplundh is contracted by Dominion Construction, the principle contractor on the project, to provide the tree removal services. Many of the street’s older, established trees were earmarked for removal and this caused a lot of contention and public opposition. Asplundh’s experienced and professional team has had to deal with political issues, media and even protestors on this highly sensitive project.
Asplundh provides professional, efficient services with minimum disruption to this high profile, busy street. Flexibility is key, and our staff regularly work weekends and at short notice to get the job done with the least amount of interruption possible. We have a team who are on call to meet every eventuality.
The majority of our work was undertaken using a combination of Elevated Working Platforms or Cherry Pickers and manual climbing techniques. The tight spaces and limited working area due to the proximity of the road to the trees meant that the majority of the work was carried out during off peak hours to minimise the impact to the public.
The partnership with Dominion Construction has been extremely successful especially considering the sensitive nature of the project and both parties are pleased with the working relationship to date. Underpinning this strong relationship is good communication and forward planning.
"I would like to thank you and your team for your contribution to the Queen Street Upgrade. The conditions for working were by no means easy and your team handled the constraints (traffic, pedestrians, noise complaints) with ease and professionally at all times. [We] look forward to working with you in the future."
